Here are the tips for safely charging your devices while you are on the road.
Know your limits.
Car owners have the right to have a car that is capable of being used for its intended purpose.
If you have a motorcycle or truck, you’re not allowed to have an unlimited number of charge stations in your vehicle, or to have multiple chargers on the same vehicle.
However, if you’re a homeowner or rental property owner, you may be able to charge multiple devices.
For example, a smartphone charging station in a garage is allowed, but if the charging station is used to charge a laptop or tablet, it’s not.
Also, if your mobile device is a wireless device and is in a car, the device must be connected to the car’s charging system before it can be charged.
Set up your car to charge at home.
It’s illegal to leave a charger unattended in your home.
If a charger is not in your glove compartment, make sure it’s connected to your phone, and it must be accessible when you need it most.
Know the limits.
In some states, if the charger is installed in a vehicle, it must also be connected when the car is turned on.
If it’s plugged into a USB port, the charger must be plugged into the same power source.
If the charging system is used for other purposes, the car must also have a charger that can be connected and used in conjunction with it.
If your car is not equipped with a charging port, check your vehicle’s manual to see if it has a power outlet.
If there is a charger, it should be a standard USB charger with a power port that’s labeled for the vehicle.
If possible, check the manual for a plug that can also be used as a power adapter.
Know where the charger can be safely installed.
To charge a mobile phone, a charger must have a battery that’s larger than 2.5 pounds (1.8 kilograms) and that has a charging circuit that allows it to draw a minimum of 5 volts per milliliter (ml).
If you’re using your phone to charge an iPad or laptop, make certain the charger fits snugly into your car’s dash.
If not, you can use an adapter to get the charging circuit on your phone and into your dash.
Get your charging station ready.
Make sure your charger has a charger port on it and a charger charging circuit.
If an adapter isn’t available, a standard 3.5-volt (5-amp) power outlet is required.
If this isn’t possible, you should also have access to a wall outlet.
In many states, this outlet will also charge your mobile phone and USB port.
If these outlets aren’t available in your area, try another outlet.
Plug in the charger.
When your car first starts, check to make sure the charging port on your charger is in the right place.
You may need to use a different plug, or a different battery, or the charger may not charge at all.
When the car starts, plug the charger into a wall socket.
The power is automatically turned on when the device is turned off, so the charging power will not be lost if you turn off the car.
This will prevent your car from overheating.
Check the charger to make certain it’s safe to charge.
Make certain that the charger’s power supply can handle the charging voltage, and that it can charge the phone safely.
The charger must also comply with the minimum standards for a mobile device charging system.
If any of these are not met, you might need to temporarily turn off your car and reconnect it to the charger, or use another outlet to charge the car until you can make sure everything is set up correctly.
Wait for the charging to finish.
This can take up to 30 minutes.
If everything is OK, wait 10 to 30 seconds, then turn off and reconnect the phone to the charging device.
Turn off the phone, then connect the charger again.
When you’re ready to turn the phone back on, wait a minute or two and then plug the phone into the charger and wait 10 seconds.
This should start charging the phone.
Check your phone again.
If all of the charging works properly, the phone will be charged again.
Check for overheating by disconnecting your phone from the charger when it’s done charging.
